Healing those wounds is a long, continual process and a great opportunity for growth, both as an artist and teacher. As a child, I was put under too much pressure and this hurt me badly. I don’t like today’s competitive climate – rooted in cold commercialism and status-seeking – that weakens this true purpose of music.
And of course, I’m delighted when my music brings the same benefits to others. When I make music, it is for this reason. Music offers tremendous joy, solace and catharsis. This kind of improvising forms the core of my own practice, as well as my teaching. I enjoying playing unplanned improvisations, exploring melody, harmony and rhythm to express my inner feelings in a way that is clear and accessible. Having always been fascinated by how rhythmic and tonal patterns are formed organically from deep simple principles and elements, I’m very happy to have acquired the skill of spontaneous musical self-expression. Most musicians now work in ways that are essentially passive – following theoretical or technical instructions or relying on intuitive mimetic skills. True musical fluency is sadly neglected in today’s music culture. I love creating music with depth but which is always unpretentious and accessible, with beautiful, soulful melodies, infectious rhythms, flowing grooves, lush harmony and vivid storytelling. So once these core fluent skills are solidly in place, students can work with me in any style they enjoy, and if desired, we can study for examinations.Īs an artist, I focus on two slightly overlapping genres: as Phil Best, I create classical-based piano music – both my own pieces and improvisations as well as classical repertoire and as PJ Best, I create soulful jazz-based songs and piano pieces. Tweaking is also easy, and still very deep. I am blown away by the playability and inspiration it offers.

As a pianist, I was aware of Pianoteq, but I always thought samplelibs sounded better. So I’m self-taught and also lucky to have studied with some great teachers, who supported my desire to become a particular kind of musician – one with real fluency in the language of music. And I’ve been exploring this musical vocabulary and syntax with great curiosity since I was a small child.
